December college corner

Catherine Graham

December means it’s finally time to deck the halls! But as you look around the school halls, you might notice students looking a little more frantic than festive (especially the upperclassmen). Why? Because December is application crunch time. Christmas break probably shouldn’t be a true “break” this year – look at it as a prime opportunity to get all those apps in and start off your new year fresh and stress-free.

Now I know most of you are thinking, “these things aren’t due until February or March… Why would I do it now?” But that, my friends, isn’t entirely true. Most regular admission college applications are due at later dates, but the “extra stuff” (scholarships, honors programs, work studies, etc.) that you really want as a freshman requires early applications. You need to give your chosen school(s) plenty of time to review your apps. Also, competitive programs like honors fill up, and scholarship money goes fast, so even if early application is not required, it’s still the best idea.

Seniors aren’t the only ones with these deadlines to look forward to either. GSP apps are due in January for juniors and GSA auditions start in February for sophomores and juniors. Plus, you can apply any year to a summer learning program like the ones hosted at Vanderbilt University, Northwestern University and other distinguished schools. These camps usually have associated fees, but early applications can get you scholarships that make them worthwhile to attend. If you don’t make GSP, it’s a great backup plan that looks good to any college in your future.

In conclusion, I’ll leave you with a deadline list for some of the more popular schools and programs around here to help you pan your holiday timeline. You have some essay writing to do during your celebrations. (But it’s okay to take a break for pie every once in a while too.)
