The Colts have started out the 2015-16 season strong thus far, and they hope to continue that trend throughout the rest of the season. West has begun the season 4-0, including a win in their home opener on December 8 against Danville.
Head basketball coach Damon Kelley said of the Colts’ early season success, “I think we’re off to a good start, obviously. Any time you’re winning, that’s important. I think we’re going to have a chance to have a really good team this year. We have some things we have to get better at, but everybody does at this time of year. We’ve got a lot of depth, we’ve got a lot of veterans in terms of juniors and seniors on the team, and so we’ve got high expectations for this year. We don’t want to look back with disappointment if we don’t achieve our goals when it’s all said and done.”
As far as what those goals are for this year’s team, Coach Kelley said, “Every year we expect to compete for district championship and regional championship, and this year’s no different. It may be a little bit tougher of a challenge this year because the favorite in our region is Mercer County and they’re also in our district, and they’re preseason top 10 in the state. They’ve got a tremendous amount of talent, they’re bigger than us, they’re quicker than us, but I think our guys look forward to the challenge of competing against them and trying to knock them off in the end.”
When asked about this team’s strengths, Coach Kelley focused on the Colts ability to score and work as a team. “We shoot the ball well, and we have the potential to be a really good passing team,” he said.
As for potential weaknesses that could hinder this team, he highlighted the importance of playing hard, playing consistently, and on both offense and defense. “We have to limit our mistakes at both ends of the floor. We can’t afford to take stretches off in the game when we don’t play our best or start worrying about individual stats. As long as we stay focused on our team goals, I think we have a chance to be pretty good.”
Everything seems to be pointing toward another great season for the Colts – and the fans – as this year’s team is shaping up to be a competitive, fun team to watch.
