This year we have in our school a variety of new teachers. Here’s one for you to get to know. Ms. Thornsberry is from Louisa, Kentucky, and she’s pretty sure you’ve never heard of it. She has a bachelor and master’s degree in Secondary English Education from the University of Kentucky, which she worked on for 5 long years. Ms. Thornsberry student-taught at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Lexington before graduating and coming to West. This is her first year of teaching, and if you have her, you definitely know.
When asked to name some books or authors she recommends to the students at West, she said, “Definitely the Harry Potter books to anyone who does not believe that reading is interesting or worthwhile, The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, or anything like Jane Eyre.”
She has a dog, whose name is Booger, and she is really looking forward to teaching her favorite unit, argumentative writing: “Arguing is fun.”
When asked why she got into teaching, Ms.Thornsberry said, “I think what made me want to be a high school teacher was I saw how, when I was in high school, my peers thought that school was boring or a waste of time, and I wanted kids to think school was interesting. Plus, literature is really cool.”
I am so glad to welcome Ms.Thornsberry to the West Jessamine High School team!
