U.S. News and World Report recently released their annual high school ranking, and West Jessamine was ranked the eighth best high school in all of Kentucky. In a chat with Assistant Principal Scott Wells, he voiced his enthusiasm with the ranking: “I couldn’t be more proud of our student body as a whole and the effort they put in on a daily basis to strive to become better. Our staff deserves the credit for their commitment to providing the best education for our students.”

A Race Without a Finish

Year after year, the Boston marathon is heralded as one of the great American sport events and attracts thousands of fans and participants. What was meant to bring out the best in competition turned into the worst of circumstances at such an event. Two brothers, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, acted in a violent and terroristic plot to plant a bomb near the finish line of the Boston marathon. A West student shared his opinion on the tragic incident: “I truly can’t believe an act like this would take place, it seems psychotic. If a charitable and friendly sporting event that I planned to run in one day isn’t considered safe anymore, than what is?”

With such a horrific event still on our minds a week and half later all we can do is pray for the victims and their families. “… A tragedy like this needs to be remembered and precautions need to be taken to prevent future attacks like this heading into the future. My heartfelt prayers and sympathy go out to the people of Boston.”

Guys and girls, with spring break rapidly approaching and a recent “wave” of us heading to various beaches and warm locations as our destinations, we will be among thousands of other high school students and making new friends. Meeting new people can be awkward. With that in mind, here are some key phrases compiled by the newspaper staff to assist you in breaking the ice with new groups of people on Spring Break.

1.      I must be lost… because I see paradise.
2.      I don’t know which is prettier today, the water, the sky, or your eyes.
3.      You may not be able to tell by the looks of me, but I can run really fast.

All in all, I wish everyone a safe and fun spring break and encourage everyone to make the right decisions and enjoy the time away!
